First performed in 1972, it is still heard frequently and sounds just as fresh today. Using this work for amplified flute, cello and piano as a centre point, Land's End explores the presentation of works as "1st Act" and "2nd Act" combinations, as well as the legacy that George Crumb has left with composers living today. Alongside Crumb will be a work commissioned by the Marsyas Trio (UK) from Laura Jayne Bowler, the new Artistic Director at Land's End. This work has been commissioned as a "2nd Act" to the "1st Act" that is George Crumb's Vox Balaenae; a continuation, innovation and development of the soundworld created by Crumb. We will also be performing the work of Crumb's student, William Jordan (Head of Music, U of C); Owl Song for violin, cello and piano, bookended by a "1st Act" and "2nd Act" combination of two solo works by Montreal-based composer, Ana Sokolovic: Vez for solo cello, and Cinque dances pour violon solo. The programme travels through the meditative, alluring sound-world of Crumb's Vox Balaenae to the raw, un-nerving world of Bowler's new work, passing through two energetic explorations for solo instruments by Ana Sokolovic. ____________________

Georges Aperghis Nuit a la tete Georges Aperghis (Greece, b. 1945), a student of the infamous Greek composer, Iannis Xenakis, is currently based in France working predominantly in exhibitionist, experimental music theatre (works). He is a dominant figure in European new music life, and is a frequent member of the Faculty at the illustrious IMD Festival of New Music in Darmstadt, Germany. Land's End features his work in the Happening New Music Festival, bringing this unique composer's music into focus in Western Canada. Aperghis' vocal writing is hugely exploratory, striving to achieve the most unusual, interesting, raw, visceral, mechanical and improvisatory qualities. Alongside his Recitations and Nuit a la tete will be a World Premiere by a Greek PhD student at the University of Calgary, Osmosis/Zymosis by Michalis Andronikou. Both composers draw on the connection of their heritage, but also show extreme contrast in musical sound worlds. Also featured are two contrasting works for piano trio by Kelly-Marie Murphy and Laurie Radford, electronic sound processing being a prominent feature of the latter. ____________________

SCANDINAVIA
Saturday, April 27, 2013, 8:00 PM National Music Centre (formerly Cantos) 134 - 11 Avenue SE Francois Houle, clarinet Laura Jayne Bowler, artistic director John Lowry, violin Beth Root Sandvoss, cello Susanne Ruberg-Gordon, piano Rodney Sharman Pavane, Galliard and Variations Bent Sorenson Phantasmagoria Magnus Lindberg Ablauf Simon Steen Anderson Rerendered Winner of LE Composers Competition Francois Houle Ethos Studies With a huge wealth of exciting new music coming out of Scandanavia, Land’s End wanted to bring some of that rich musical sound world to Calgary. A work by the celebrated Finnish composer, Magnus Lindberg, presenting the clarinet soloist with an array of extrovert theatrics against a ritualistic accompaniment of the two bass drums, is programmed alongside Simon Steen Anderson’s innovative work for pianist and two quasi-dumpster diving assistants, so this concert is sure to be a feature for both the ears and eyes! The Scandinavian soundscape is book-ended by works of Canadian origin, creating, what can only be described as, a Canadian-Scandinavia Sandwich! ____________________
